The Beginner's Skincare Routine

Four steps in the morning, four at night. That's it.

Morning: cleanse

A gentle, low-foam cleanser. If your skin squeaks afterwards, it is too strong. Lukewarm water only - hot water flushes and dehydrates.

Morning: treat

One antioxidant serum (vitamin C is the classic) on damp skin. This is your daytime protection layer against pollution and light damage.

Morning: hydrate

A moisturiser matched to your type - gel-cream for oily and combination, richer cream for dry. Yes, oily skin needs moisturiser too.

Morning: protect

Broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, two finger-lengths for face and neck. This is the single highest-return step in your whole routine.

Evening: double cleanse

Cleansing oil or balm first to lift makeup and sunscreen, then your gentle cleanser. Skipping this is the fastest route to congestion.

Evening: treat

Your active night - retinol or an exfoliating acid, never both in one evening. Start twice a week and build up as your skin tolerates it.

Evening: hydrate and repair

A hydrating serum plus a barrier-supporting moisturiser. Ceramides, niacinamide and peptides are your friends here.

How long until it works

Hydration improves in days. Texture and breakouts take 6-8 weeks. Pigmentation takes 12 weeks or more. Stay consistent and photograph your progress weekly.
